The Elegance at Hershey

The 2015 Elegance at Hershey was unquestionably once again one of the best concours shows here on the east coast! I like this show very much as you can see it all in a single day while enjoying 75 of the finest cars in the world displayed in the gardens at the Hotel Hershey. This year, the Historic Vehicle Association (HVA) and the Peoples Choice Award was awarded to an iconic car, the car that definitely influenced my appreciation of sports cars, the James Bond Aston Martin DB5!  Owned by Harry Yeaggy of Cincinnati OH, this fantastic car was shown in it's original condition, as built by Aston Martin, and later equipped by Q for Bond,  This is one of two cars used in the filming of "Goldfinger" in 1964 and all the options were there, from the front mounted machine guns to the rotating license plate.  Check out the familiar switches in the center console and the mobile phone in the door!  I was shaken and stirred!  Click on The Elegance at Hershey for a full list of 2015 winners.

USA 7s Track Day

Several years ago I bought a Super Seven, a minimalist machine built for pure driving pleasure. I have had my ups and downs with this car; as some of you know I had an unplanned off road excursion a couple of years ago... not a good day. After completing a rebuild in 2013, this Birkin Super Seven was once again road worthy and my sons ran it successfully on the 2013 America's British Reliability Run. This year at Amelia Island, I ran into a friend who invited me to a USA 7s Track Day at New Jersey Motorsport Park in Millville, NJ. We accepted knowing that our Seven, prepared as a street car,
would be running with many track prepared cars. Typically at  a "track day" you need to have minimal safety gear, a roll bar, helmet and gloves will do it.  It's "point by passing" so no surprises in the mirror, as you point to which side you will be passed by faster cars coming from behind,  however only on the straights. Very safe no trading paint! All went very well as my son Ryan and I rotated through four sessions. Our USA 7s group was just "Sevens" on track and everyone in the group was very patient with us, as we learned the ropes. As the day went on we improved our lap times. The best tip we got was a GPS based app that I downloaded for my iPhone 6+ called "Harry's Lap Timer", not cheap but worth every penny as you will see all the data you see on this video was captured from my phone. What a great learning tool and souvenir of our track day!  We have to schedule more of these!

Enclave "Healeys on Hallowed Ground"

July 19th – 24th

We are pleased to report that ENCLAVE 2015 drew over 300 registrants, resulting in over 240 Austin Healeys in the Popular Choice Show on Wednesday July 15th. This was the largest gathering of Austin Healey's in over 20 years!  Our client's 100M took "class honors" with his
1954 " Dealer M" out of 12 cars. Mike also took a First Place in the performance class in the gymkana!  Ragtops & Roadsters was very proud to sponsor both the judged Concours Show and the Banquet Dinner, and this year's gathering of two great Austin Healey Clubs. How many Judges does it take to inspect a Bugeye? Which one is really BRG?

Restoration Report: 1969 Mercedes 280 SL

by: Ragtops & Roadsters Shop Manager, David Jago

After nearly two years of work by our technicians at both Ragtops & Roadsters and Pollock Auto Restoration this Mercedes 280 SL was just delivered to our happy clients. Betty bought this car back in 1973 and drove it regularly through 1982. Then along came their son Ryan in 1984 and the 280SL was put aside for a newer BMW with a back seat.  After 33 years of sitting idle we brought this classic back to life by first completing a mechanical re-freshening. We then hammered out the minor metal repairs, resprayed this SL in its original Mercedes color and new fitted a new top.  We first met Betty and Don at the New Hope Auto Show two years ago, and this year we expect to see them again at the show next weekend. This time with their favorite classic car on the show field!

Vintage Triumph Register 2015 National Convention

August 11th – 15th

Right after the New Hope Auto Show, we are packing up and headed west to attend the 2015 Vintage Triumph Register National Convention in Geneva Lake, Wisconsin.  It's not too late to register!  We will be showing the 1960 Triumph Italia 2000 GT Vignale #122 for it's VTR debut. This Italia 2000 is again the collaborative effort of both teams at Ragtops & Roadsters and Pollock Auto Restoration and we very are very proud of the results. This year's convention will feature the Spitfire MKII and the TR4A.  Both are Michelotti cars and cousins of the Italia 2000.  Wish us luck!

America's British Reliability Run

October 16th – 18th

IT IS NOW TIME TO PLAN TO ATTEND THE EVENT! Since 2002, America’s British Reliability Run has raised over $150,000 for worthy children’s charities all over the US. We’re at it again in 2015! On the weekend of Oct 16-18, up to 40 classic British Cars will leave on a three day, 600 mile journey through the back roads of PA, NY and NJ to benefit the St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children. Along the way, we’ll take in some of the best scenery the northeast has to offer at a time when fall colors should be near their peak. Watkins Glen, Seneca Lodge, Lake Seneca, Northeast Classic Car Museum, a tour of a private British Car collection and more! Each two person team is responsible for their own expenses and will solicit donations from family, friends and others with a goal of raising $500 each for the partner charity. We will show you how!  ARE YOU UP FOR IT? Consider joining us as a participant, or sponsoring one of our teams with a tax deductible contribution. Space is limited! Make plans to get involved soon!  Ragtops & Roadsters will sponsor this event by providing support with our shop van and trailer!
