What’s Whit That?
by: Ragtops & Roadsters Shop Manager, David Jago

Ragtops & Roadsters is
working on the assembly of a 1954 MGTF, and we would be at our ‘whits
end’ trying to put it all together if we didn’t know the trick— The
MGT’s were built with a combination of hardware, and even though it may
appear correct, even fit well, specific bolt types are used for specific
portions of the car. The body uses Whitworth hardware, having a 55°
thread angle, and requiring tools designed for those bolts. The engine,
although similar to Whitworth hardware, actually uses French metric or
‘Nuffield Mad Metric’ hardware. These are metric threads (60° profile)
with Whitworth heads, common in the XPAG/XPEG engines of the period.
And, just to throw a spanner into the works, the axle hardware is
unified fine thread a.k.a. UNF. Restorations like this can leave you
scratching your head, so make contact with our team for expert guidance
before you go ‘nuts.’

Ragtops & Roadsters Spring Open House
|
|
|
Ragtops
& Roadsters Spring Open House was a success despite morning gray
skies. Larry Suglia stopped by with his three-wheeled Morgan and the
Anspaughs were reunited with the original owners of Redcat, their 1971
Jaguar E-Type.

Kas Kastner Cup at Summit Point Motorsports Park
|
|
|
The Kas Kastner Cup at Summit Point Motorsports Park had a show and charity laps for us non-racers.
|
|
I followed Mike Wolf and
fellow DVT members to the Summit Point Motorsports Park on Saturday
morning. There we met about 50 fellow British car owners for a car show
held by Country Roads Car Club. About two dozen Triumphs and the same
number of MGs attended to support their respective marque and to enjoy a
weekend of vintage racing. Ronnie Babbitt and his good friends Russ and
Jordan Pierce debuted their beautiful Macua Spitfire having just
finished the car the night before! This father-son team, with Ronnie's
help and direction built this tribute car using and very rusty 1964
Spitfire abandon in the woods as a donor, paying homage to the Macau
Spitfire prepared by Kas Kastner and raced back in 1965. Job well done!
Many
of us signed up for "Charity Laps" It was my privilege to try to scare
Mike Cook, as my tires squealed around a tight hairpin
turn. Mike was very disappointed to hear my tires were over
20 years old!
 Racing
was called off early than planned due to rain late
on Saturday, but the feature race, the 13th Annual Kastner Cup
race was eventually ran and won by Mark Wheatley in his
TR-4 on Sunday morning after skies cleared.
This beautiful early Ice Blue TR 2 "Long door" (Yes that's Ice Blue) won a First Place in the MG-Triumph Show. A good weekend for TRIUMPH!

Cars & Motorcycles of England
|
|
|
Many recently orphaned British Cars were there looking for new owners.
|
|
The Cars and Motorcycles of England
was well attend this year and weather could not have been better. The
Delaware Valley Jaguar Concours had over 50 of the finest Jaguars
in the area attend, with 40 cars subject to the scrutiny of the DVJ
Judges. We were very pleased to have the 1946 Jaguar MK IV Saloon that
we just mechanically sorted through after sitting for many years, and
detailed, score over 99 points! Congratulations to the Polis Family for
their win!

Karl and Lori Kritzer claimed the DVJ "Peoples Choice Award for their
stunning early flat floor E-Type. Over 160 British Cars of all marques
were on the east lawn!

Bob DeLucia and Kevin Baker presented DVT Members and DVJ Members, Al
and Robin Anspaugh of Yardley, PA with a First Place Award for their
beautiful 1960 Triumph Italia 2000.

Ragtops
& Roadsters sponsored and Mike Engard presented the DVT
"Peoples Choice Award" to Robert Hill for his 1954 MGTF Tribute Car
built right here in America!
The People's Choice winning MGTF is a "Tribute Car" and are most
commonly referred to as “Victor/MG TF-1800s.” In 1980 British
Leyland, who owned the MG Brand, authorized Great Lakes Motor Cars of
Rochester, NY to build 25 vehicles as a 25th Anniversary “Tribute” to
the T-Series of MGs using all MG components. Robert's example shown here
uses the running gear (1800cc engine, gearbox, rear, disk-brakes,
suspension, instruments, seats, etc.) from a 1969 MGB placed on a custom
chassis to accommodate the 1954 TF body. This is the last of the 25
created. Roughly 95% of the components are MG and are interchangeable
with the original roadster and an appropriate TF VIN number was issued
by British Leyland. The car is titled, registered and tagged as a 1954
MG TF. Of the original 25 created 4 were right-hand-drive and shipped to
the UK. Who knew! Congratulations Robert!
